The nearby Mackinaw Island is a particular highlight of the area, hosting a preserved village that has banned motor vehicles. The area is also full of history, its strategic location made it a conflict point among the English, French and Americans in the 17th and 18th centuries. Historic sites include Fort Michilimackinac, a reconstructed fur-trading post and military fort that dates back to 1715, and the Historic Mill Creek, a restored 18th-century sawmill.
